My Introduction:

I am system administrator in an IT company in Bangalore for last two years. I have completed my post-graduate degree in commerce, and later on I found my interest in computer hardware and networking and, therefore, shifted to Bangalore to explore my career in right direction. I am technically good and looking for best opportunity to prove myself in this field.

My observations towards this field:
Before joining the company my assumption regarding System Administrator’s roles and responsibilities was very limited. As per my earlier view, System administrator has merely the role of handling and taking care of IT equipments and solving upcoming day to day issues and that is all and over. Later I realized the truth that I was thoroughly unprepared and unaware of System administrative work. As the days passed and I involved into many activities and came to know it is not that simple as I presumed. Once you deal with unknown/new problems and you don’t find any way or person who can assist or support and make you comfortable, then situation become more difficult to handle.
Basically I observed some real facts that, obviously, pinpoint a negative aspect of this field, and we cannot deny it just like that, as since I started working in this field and found that people don’t prefer to share their experience, the way of working or the knowledge they have. They intentionally avoid teaching/guiding each others, and of course there are some actual facts and figures responsible to make us building such non-helping nature/habit. Indeed it is difficult to search out reasons why it happens? But though there are certain points, as follows, that seem to be valid for representing that kind of environment among all of us:

Reasons for not supporting each others:

Circumstances that makes an engineer unfavorable in nature:

In initial stage, Hardware engineer starts working from the bottom level of this field, and work extremely hard to establish himself in this field, physically and mentally too, moreover he notices some beginners failing and leaving out from this field.
He hardly get favorable opportunity to learn from others, whatever he learns, learns from his day-to-day working experience and mistakes.
His learning undergoes very long time-period and step-by-step he understands how to manage and how to find solutions to the problems.
In certain cases, where engineer finds himself alone without any supporter/instructor/guide to solve hang up issues.
System engineer obviously works very hard to learn or to understand the things, as because he values his effort behind the experience he gained, and how can he share his knowledge to someone so easily?

Environment in company: (Especially in small organization)

Whenever he makes mistake, he has to be responsible for all that, instead of the whole supportive team.
Whenever he performs well, initiative is taken by whole team or company. he is, personally, not much appreciated by others. Especially in small organization, sometime Appreciation of an engineer is neglected as it creates a chance for an engineer to know his value and importance in company, And it is indirectly unfavorable to beginners who has aim to prove himself and grow his career.
Everyone prefer to grow as individual than as a group.

Competition: Even engineers are very gentle people, though they do not support each other just because of competition. of course, this is the Competition that makes them to build-up this unfavorable and non-supporting nature. i.e.

Everyone likes to be better than other; therefore they do not motivate others to perform better.
Having more knowledge than other is a big comfort for any engineer.

And I personally feel nothing wrong here because, indeed, it has to happen wherever the competition exists. Hence working hard and making skillful image in our site is more important rather than building image in front of company, and we are supposed to have strong belief that we deserve the position what we hold. These unfavorable feelings and gaps that increase differences among all of us should be removed from the mind and take initiative of supporting each other. We should forget all competitive feelings towards each other and work together. In fact, it doesn’t mean that we cannot improve by ourselves; obviously our experience makes us skillful and strong to deal with problems, but it takes time, and we cannot leave ourselves on upcoming time and opportunity, because the reality emphasize and make us think that the completion is much higher and we have to be very fast in learning, achieving, developing our self with our goals in this field.

How to develop our skills and building up our career?

Now one question arises automatically, is there any way to develop skills just with a support of our efficiency/capability? Yes there is still a chance to grow up the level we dreamed. As I feel, there are two types of people:

Talented people: The one who is born talented.
Hard working people: The second one who becomes talented by their outstanding efforts and experiences.

Indeed, it takes time to become talented, but it is not possible that who works hard and achieves nothing, as because ‘Practice Makes a Man perfect’. In our field there are two way to become master.

One way to work hard with all of our effort and gain experience through our individual working, but it is time consuming.
Another way is to work in a group and share experience with each other. Sharing experience decreases the time of learning and provides the opportunity to make the best use of time. Therefore the task, which takes long time to achieve individually, can be obtained within surprisingly less time

Building a community is a best idea:

The second point, as the above mentioned, is the best idea to execute to explore our talent. Therefore, to find out the best learning key or opportunity to establish our self in this field is to build up a large group of people who is ready to support each other honestly by heart in any cost, time and conditions. In other word, a group that is happily ready, agreed and available to share their views, ideas, problems, solutions and achievements to build up a strong network that can fight and short out any impossible looking task without any promise or personal benefit, as just a thinking of our moral duty is to support each other. Obviously we do not gain directly anything in monetary terms, but definitely we would get more than that in terms of better career, future with vast experience and knowledge of the field.
In my opinion, planning, implementing, monitoring and maintenance all are technical process that requires experienced and skillful people for execution of entire project since beginning to the end. In other hand coordinating and working together can makes us strong, knowledgeable and skillful rather than working alone. Circulation of knowledge is far better than preserving/dumping knowledge in one’s mind. One can easily increase his knowledge if he spreads it among friends. Some of the benefits of sharing knowledge are as below:

Power of Sharing Knowledge:
An example: A new mathematics teacher, in the beginning, does not have much confidence on his art of teaching and understanding the basic logic/funda behind mathematical equations and formulas. But once he begins sharing or teaching his subject to the students he himself starts understanding the tough logics behind mathematics that was not possible at the time of his study as student. Even no one helps the new teacher to clarify his tough topic and concept of the subject, though regularly sharing knowledge with the students daily, makes him master of his subject.

Sharing knowledge makes us feel happy to help other.
Sharing knowledge is indirectly helping our self.
Sharing knowledge provides clear vision of the concept.
Sharing knowledge makes us strong, as per knowledge, in the field to take up new challenges.
Sharing knowledge facilitates us with the opportunity to correct our self wherever we are wrong.
It provide healthy environment of working
It helps to maintain good relations among employees/members.
It provides best possible source of solutions.
It is, somehow, associated with motivating each other.
Big issues automatically appear very small in coordination with members.
It is an opportunity to become best friend and guide for each other.
It acquires the facility of obtaining maximum knowledge from friends.

Therefore ‘sharing knowledge is a must for career growth.’

Drawback for not sharing knowledge:

Generally we are filled with satisfaction that we have sufficient knowledge of the concerned field, and it is absolutely right and therefore we don’t even try to gain more knowledge and never work hard. Sometimes this satisfaction blocks our mind to improve or develop ourselves professionally and we forget our deserved level of ability and talent. We feel no requirement of anything more than we currently have or we limit and fit ourselves on some constant level.
In another case, we have to compromise with our underperformance just due to insufficient knowledge; We are very sensitive to our feelings. At times we demoralize our self because of dissatisfaction on task, and we give up the way for our desired things due to mind block with the fake assumption that we are not talented or it is out of our reach. We don’t believe learning together, until we share with and support each other; therefore we, of course, miss golden opportunity and face problems in day to day jobs like:

Limited knowledge.
Lack of confidence on work.
No much opportunity for improvements.
Lack of understanding to reach proper viewpoints.
Not having complete information of any concerned subject.
No viewpoints for correctness and completeness about the work executed.
Our belief on our concept, that it is absolutely right, might be wrong in reality.
Not getting proper and genuine suggestion and guidance for unsolved issues.
May create a cause of failure in completion of a task/project.
Not getting help at proper time when required.

Obviously, Books are complete institution on itself, and no individual can provide such knowledgeable information and we can never find the better materials anywhere as books provide, but though we require teachers/tutor to explain, as because books provide just proper and complete reading material, we cannot put up our queries/doubt before books and books do not provide or share experience too. Even after having collection of books and course material. We need each other's support and assistance. Therefore, here, the community is itself works as institution and we are the students as well as the teachers for each other.

(B) Satisfaction towards services and solutions:

Whenever we need some On-Time-Solution and Service we look after any Computer service providers or technology vendors on Payment basis or Under AMC. Of course we get solution and feel satisfaction. But we never consider and cross-question with ourselves that: Are the services/solutions provided by vendor to us IS BEST? Would it fulfill our entire requirement appropriately?, because even after the Service, we may and may not meet our desired level of satisfaction, therefore we are always unaware about One-Real-Fact that THE MASTER SOLUTION is still disappearing from our site. If we implement all of it, it would indeed reduce our task, time and burden and make work easier. (Actually I believe we purchase software but do not implement/utilize it completely. At least we should acquire all the possibilities to use all feature of a software to make the maximum use of it.)

As it provides variety of views and ideas to us by uploading queries and its solutions, and becomes the source of best material as notes for learning and understanding technology more clearly.
Indeed, it would become beneficial to all of us if we put up our queries and suggestion here on it. It is the best place of sharing and circulating knowledge for keeping ourselves up-to-date. The biggest way of gaining knowledge is sharing knowledge, as we know, because teaching is itself a best source of learning for every individual.

By sending mails to the community member’s Group E-mail Accounts:
E-mail is a good source of messaging. In case, we don’t get time or forget to open blog due to some reasons or intent to gain attention to all the members against the problems we have and need some urgent solution, we can use Group E-mail Account for prompt reply.
As we don’t need to mention about E-mail messages, it’s a good source of communication where we can pass information/messages without disturbing/interrupting others.

Contact to the member on Direct phone numbers
If any member succeeds building up a co-operative relationship with the member and member are ready to attend you on phone as per their convenient time to assist you, it would be his smartness and quality of effort or achievement to have such supportive relationship with others. It would depend upon every individual that how much we are serious about our career and how much we utilize our community for our best.
As a responsible member of the community, we ought to keep one thing in mind that we should not to disturb other members for taking assistance, before asking for support/help we have to ensure that the member, before us, is happily ready to listen our problem or not, If not, we are not supposed to disturb other member unnecessarily, as there may be many other circumstances like time and interest to support.

By online messaging i.e. chatting
Instead of Uploading queries/suggestions on the blog, using Group E-mail ids and directly contact via phone, we may use live chat as well. It is also a convenient way of interaction. But it does not provide open platform to share views to all of the member, as it limited between online members.

Dear Friends,

I would like to say hello to everyone and take the opportunity to introduce myself to you all. I am currently working as a system admin in IT Company. Basically, I belong to Meerut (U.P).

..........Before joining the company my assumption regarding System Administrator’s roles and responsibilities was very limited. As per my earlier view, System administrator has merely the role of handling and taking care of IT equipments and solving upcoming day-to-day issues and that is all and over.

..........Later I observed the truth that I was thoroughly unprepared and unaware of System administrative work. As the days passed and I involved into many activities and came to know it is not that simple as I presumed. Once you deal with unknown/new problems and you do not find any way or person who can support you and make you comfortable and mentally prepared to face the issue, then the situation becomes more difficult to handle.

..........Therefore, as I realized, to find out the best learning key or opportunity to establish our self in this field is to build up a large network of people who is ready to support each other honestly by heart in any cost, time and conditions. In other word, a group that is happily ready, agreed and available to share their views, ideas, problems, solutions and achievements to spread technical knowledge and experiences to build up a strong network that can fight and short out any tough task without any promise or personal benefit, as just a thinking of our moral duty is to support each other. Obviously we do not gain directly anything in monetary terms, but definitely we would get more than that in terms of better career, future with vast experience and knowledge of the field.
